Year 1 Class Newsletter - Term 5 & 6 - Summer 2010

Class teachers: Mrs Jen Hodgson & Miss Vicki Liddell;
Student Teacher: Miss Laura West;
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Charis Higgs

Dear parents and children,

Welcome back to school, we hope you have all enjoyed the Easter holidays and the
sunshine. This term we would like to welcome Laura West, a final placement PGCE student who will be with us in Year 1 until halfway through Term 6, we know you will all make her feel very welcome at our school.

The new topic will be “Going Green!”, which links to our Science learning about green plants, growth and the environment. As a prompt from this, we will use key texts as focus points in Literacy, as well as a range of non-fiction books, poetry and personal experiences such as the farm trip! The children will learn to write instruction texts and stories with familiar settings, as well as following the Letters and Sounds phases. We continue to work on handwriting in Year 1 also. Our learning in Numeracy will see us solving problems using doubling and halving and involving real-life problems with money and time, place value, counting on and back in jumps (eg. 2s, 5s, 10s) and explaining our reasoning of how we have solved problems. Our geography learning also links nicely to the topic, where we look at our local environment and study the process “from field to fork”, learning about local and global produce. We will also think about how we can make our local area a safer place. We will be learning e-safety and communicating text in our ICT lessons. In DT, we will be learning about our environment, particularly playgrounds and then fruit and vegetables in Term 6. We will be learning about our own religion, Judaism and communicating prayer in R.E. and our PSHE lessons will be about the environment and relationships. We are focussing on outdoor games and athletic activities in P.E. by learning to control and coordinate our throws and catches, as well as running, hopping, skipping and jumping. We will also be practising Sports Day activities. The class will learn about instruments and symbols in Music, whilst we will be identifying social conventions and practising our language skills in French.

All classroom routines are the same, please remember your child needs full P.E. kit in schools on Mondays and Fridays, including outdoor kit, with their names clearly marked.

Thank you
