Year 2

Class Information – Year 2 Terms 3 and 4 2010

Class: Year Two

Teacher: Louise Pimm

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Kate Watson

Early Morning work / Activities that can be done at home
Children in Key stage 1 can come into school from 8.45. From 8.45 until 8.55 there will be an early morning activity set up for them to do. This activity will be spellings using their ‘Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check’ books. To encourage children to become independent learners, please encourage your child to complete their early morning work independently. These spellings will be different from the ones that come home on Mondays.
Spellings will be sent home on a Monday and tested on a Friday. Please ensure your child has time to practice their spellings.

Reading books/ Record books
Children in year 2 are expected to change their own reading books. Each reading group will have an allocated day for when they can change their reading books. It is advisable for the children to change their books before registration. Children only need to change their books when they have been read and record their new books in their white reading record, which stays in school. Children must only take 3 books at a time and must not move onto the next band until it has been discussed with me.
Please record a comment in your child’s yellow reading record so we know they have been heard read and can keep up to date with their progress.

P.E lessons/Kit (As part of the curriculum, a full PE kit should be in school at all times).
P.E this term is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children will cover a programme of Gym and Dance. For P.E, children are required to have a pair of black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a red or white T-shirt. They also require a pair of daps and trainers. Please can all these items be named to save confusion.

Curriculum Topics
This academic year, we are continuing to adopt a more creative approach to the curriculum, using the 6 areas of learning from the foundation stage curriculum. This means the children will be able to develop stronger cross curricular links and allow for ‘child led learning’.
In Key Stage One, we will be following the National Numeracy and Literacy Strategies. Numeracy this term covers ordinal numbers, understanding + and – and shape, space and measures. Literacy this term covers Traditional stories, Explanational texts and Poetry.
Our topic for terms 3 and 4 is ‘How Does Your Garden Grow?’ This topic will cover Health and Growth, Plants and Animals, ‘Winding Up’ in DT, painting and colour mixing in art, Internet safety and Handling Information in ICT. The children will also be finding out more about China and Mexico when we look at contrasting localities in Geography.
French and handwriting will be taught by Mrs Davies on a Wednesday afternoon during my P.P.A time.

By the end of Year Two Children will be expected to achieve a level Two in these subjects.

Morning break snack
The school continues to participate in “Free Fruit for Schools”, therefore a piece of fruit will be given to the children at first play. If possible, please could you provide a healthy snack for your child for 2nd play.

Any other class information
If you need to see me at any time I will of course make myself available. However, it does help, if non-urgent, if you could arrange to see me as I can then make sure we will have no disturbances. Anyone wishing to help, please let me know – it would be greatly appreciated.
