Year 5 Newsletter Spring Term 2010

Dear Parents

A Happy New Year to you all! Thank you for the generous Christmas gifts I received from so many of you. It was most kind and greatly appreciated. My love of chocolate seems to have been noticed! I hope you like the photograph – a reminder of the brilliant day we had at Sevington Victorian School.

We will be joined this term by Miss Naomi Heydon, a student from Bath Spa University who will be assisting me in teaching the class. We will also be welcoming Katie Dunsden into Year 5. I am sure the children will make them both welcome.

I try to make the curriculum exciting, active and as relevant to the children as possible. This term in Literacy Year 5 and 6 will be studying persuasive writing and argument. We will be organising a debate and looking at how the country is governed through parliament. On Thursday March 25th Years 5 and 6 will be visiting the Houses of Parliament and The Tate Gallery. A letter will follow with all the details including the cost and timings.

I am sure I do not need to remind you the children have homework each weekend and it is very important that they make every attempt to do the work themselves. However, I would be grateful if you could help your child if he or she does have difficulties. The children are to be commended, as the homework is always in on time and usually done to a high standard.

Each child has spelling words and tables to learn during the week with a test on a Friday. The children also have a mental maths test on a Friday and they should make every effort to improve their mental arithmetic abilities by practising at home.

Each child has a reading book to take home and it is important that they continue not only to read for themselves, but also to an adult in order to encourage their fluency and speed. Well done the children who achieved a Riddler Reading certificate at the end of last term. This will continue this term so please encourage your child to read to an adult 3 times a week.

Parents’ evenings are on Wednesday March 3rd and Thursday March 4th when we will discuss your child’s progress; whether your child achieved last term’s targets and set their new targets for this term.

May I also remind you that the Class require their P.E. and games kit on Monday and Friday as the weather depicts which day we do games.

I am always looking to get the best from the children academically and I look forward to your support at home in this task. If any parent feels they can give any time to the school I would be most grateful for their help.

If you have any concerns regarding your child, please do not hesitate to contact me after school.

Yours sincerely

T Wheelwright
