Computing is all around us; it is creative, evolutionary and functional.  At Derry Hill we recognise how technology underpins today’s fast moving lifestyle and are passionate about developing learners to be well-equipped for the ever-changing technological world they will live in.  Through a range of discrete and curriculum linked lessons children will develop confidence to use digital technology thoughtfully and responsibly whilst gaining the appropriate skills and competencies for adult life and employment.

Intent

Children at Derry Hill will:

• Understand and apply the fundamental principles of computer science, including logic, algorithms, data representation, and communication.
• Analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
• Evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
• Be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
• Develop, maintain and stimulate children’s curiosity, interest and enjoyment in computing.
• Have opportunities to develop their insight into the value of computing as a tool for education, lifestyle and productivity
• Have equal access to computing and to experience success in their work.

Implementation

At Derry Hill School we provide through an enriching and varied curriculum (planned through ilearn2) that allows the children the opportunity to develop their computing skills.  Enjoyment is at the heart of all learning so the children have access to a range of exciting and stimulating resources that builds their skills year on year. Much of our teaching in computing is through a  cross-curricular approach, allowing the children to showcase their skills in a range of meaningful contexts.  Knowledge and skills are mapped across each topic and year group to ensure systematic progression. We have a computing suite and a set of ipads to ensure that all year groups have the opportunity to use a range of devices and programs for many purposes across the wider curriculum, as well as in discrete computing lessons. The implementation of the curriculum also ensures a balanced coverage of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. During each year, the children will gain experiences of all three strands with the knowledge imparted becoming increasingly more specific and in depth.
